Call for papers for the symposium "The role of animals in the prehispanic mesoamerican cultures - Summary of recent zooarchaeological and paleobotanical studies" which is planned to held at the First Latinamerican Congress of Ethnobiology that will take place from the 2nd - 6th of november 2009 at the Autonomous Hidalgo State University, Pachuca-Tulancingo, Mexico (see http://www.aetnobiolmex.com/).
Original Title"EL PAPEL DE LOS ANIMALES EN LAS CULTURAS MESOAMERICANAS PREHISPÁNICAS - SEMBLANZA DE RECIENTES INVESTIGACIONES ZOOARQUEOLÓGICOS Y PALEOBOTÁNICOS". Symposium organizers
ProgramThe symposium is planned to combine and present recent zooarchaeological information that has been obtained in the last years concerning the use of animals by prehispanic cultures of Mesoamerica, which includes but is not limited to Olmecs, Zapotecs, to the inhabitants of the ancient city of Teotihuacan, Mayas and Aztecs, but can also refer to cultural manifestations of the northern portion of Central America, if connected to the cultures mentioned previously. There are multiple subjects that can potentially be considered for the symposium. We would like to include presentations containing a) the use of plants and animals for food, b) the use of plants and animals for rituals, c) economic aspects related to the use and consumption of plants and animals, d) the management and breed of livestock and domestic animals and plants and e) the ecological impact related to Mesoamerican civilizations under the condition that the researches are based on archaeological material. A wide array of different themes was selected to circumscribe the multiple utilization of animals by the Mesoamerican cultures. We intend furthermore to stimulate interesting discussions about the importance of animales in the context of the prehispanic Mesoamerican cultures. InformationThe presentations can be written in Spanish, English or Portuguese. Anyone interested in participating in this symposium, please send the title and abstract (max. 150 words) of the presentation together with the confirmation to the e-mail addresses mentioned below. Proposals will be received until the 25TH of JUNE 2009 at the latest. For more information please contact : Raúl Valadez Azúa (raul_valadez@hotmail.com) and Christopher M. Götz (cgotz@uady.mx). |
