The Department of Archaeology at the University of York is ranked 18th in the world in the QS rankings. Role

This position is part of the UKRI-funded project RATTUS: Rats and the Archaeology of Trade, Urbanism, and Disease in Past European Societies, led by David Orton at the University of York. As one member in a network of collaborators, the Research Associate in Zooarchaeology will help investigate the history of black and brown rats in Europe, aiming to understand rats’ association with human settlements and communications and their role in disease. This position will be focused on sourcing and analysing rodent bone specimens and synthesising both new and legacy data to address project objectives. Working closely with the PI, the Research Associate will be expected to liaise with project collaborators across Europe, conduct zooarchaeological analysis both in York and at remote locations, arrange for export and return of samples, manage the project database and archive, and contribute to collation and synthesis of existing literature. In collaboration with other members of the RATTUS team, the Research Associate will disseminate findings at conferences and submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals. The Research Associate will have the opportunity to contribute to supervising undergraduate and postgraduate projects.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

• First degree in Archaeology, Biology, Natural Sciences, or a related field, or equivalent experience
• PhD in Zooarchaeology or a closely related field, or equivalent  experience
• Knowledge of zooarchaeology to engage in high quality research
• Knowledge of a range of  research techniques and methodologies potentially applied to archaeological animal bone
• Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience, both orally and in writing, using a range of media
• Ability to write up research work for publication in high profile journals and engage in public dissemination
• Ability to develop research objectives , projects and proposals for own and joint research, with the assistance of a mentor if required
• Competency to conduct individual and collaborative research projects
• Competency to make presentations at conferences or exhibit work in other appropriate events
• Ability to manage a project database and archive of archaeological specimens and associated data
